Special Guest Talk-Australia’s Flags Unfurled - Enhanced by Naval Heritage
About this Event
We all see flags of different shapes and sizes on RAN and other ships but why are they flown? What are their origins? In this fascinating presentation John Vaughan OAM, Vexillographer, will explore the history of some well-known flags such as the Australian National Flag/Australian Blue Ensign, White Ensigns and signal flags.
He will also talk about lesser-known pennants and the Pilot Jack. Did you know that there is a pennant, which on special occasions outranks the Australian White Ensign?
Another enthralling subject is the influence of the Royal Navy’s victory in the 1805 Battle of Trafalgar which strongly Influenced Australasian flag design from 1806. The first operational role of our national flag was as the Ensign of Australia’s Commonwealth Naval Forces in 1902. Australia’s rich maritime traditions have directly shaped the legal, functional and visual evolution of its national emblems especially flags.
This unique perspective on Australia’s rich naval history of flag flying is not to be missed.
