The Lion’s Roar is a powerful documentary honoring the voices, memories, and lived experiences of Frederick County’s African American elders. Through intimate interviews with local “Living Treasures,” the film preserves stories of childhood, family, faith, work, education, segregation, resilience, and community life across generations.
From memories of Lincoln High School and one-room schoolhouses to stories of Black-owned businesses, home births, domestic work, military service, church life, neighborhood traditions, and the everyday strength required to live through Jim Crow, The Lion’s Roar gives audiences a rare opportunity to hear history told by the people who lived it.
At its heart, this documentary is a tribute to these elders, who do more than recall the past—they remind us how love, discipline, perseverance, humor, and community helped shape Frederick’s Black history and continue to shape its future.
