For several years Territorians have been raising the alarm about impacts of the Middle Arm gas and petrochemical hub our health, climate, harbour and economy. The Middle Arm gas hub, if it proceeds, will open the door to Beetaloo fracking, potentially sending over 1 billion tonnes of carbon pollution into the air, and putting our precious waterways at risk. For those living in Darwin and Palmerston, Middle Arm could lead to toxic air pollution, destroy fishing grounds, and endanger our health. And last year, we learned that it could be an economic disaster for the Northern Territory, with the Australian Government’s own infrastructure agency rejecting the business case for the project.Despite this, the Federal Government has pledged $1.9 billion towards this toxic project. Enough’s enough. This subsidy should be redirected towards investments that will generate jobs, skills and lower bills for Territorians, and help the Territory seize the opportunities of the clean energy revolution.
This event is an opportunity to hear the latest on what research tells us about the impacts of this project on our health, our climate, and our very future - and what we can do about it.
ECNT Executive Director Kirsty Howey, Danggalaba Kulumbirgin Tiwi community organiser Mililma May, NT Paediatrician Louise Woodward, and Principle Advisor at the Australia Institute Mark Ogge will discuss what is planned for this toxic gas hub, and what it means for Darwin and Palmerston.
