ALIENS (1986) in 70mm 🎞️
Rare 70mm blow-up print with six-track magnetic sound not screened locally since 1986
James Cameron’s big-budget, action-oriented sequel to Ridley Scott’s moody original set a new standard for summertime blockbusters. Now the lone survivor of the spaceship Nostromo, Ripley (Academy Award®–nominated Sigourney Weaver) accompanies a recon expedition to the site of a space colony that had the misfortune of pitching their tent on the xenomorphs’ home planet. In addition to Weaver’s nomination, ALIENS received six other Academy Award® nominations, with wins for Visual Effects and Sound Effects Editing. RATED R
Filmed in 35mm spherical by Adrian Biddle using Moviecam equipment and enlarged to 70mm for select first-run engagements in 1986, a common practice in the ‘80s for major studio releases.
Programming Note:
This original release print uses a vintage magnetic soundtrack. Audio tracks are stored on magnetic stripes attached to the film print itself and are more prone to degrade than optical soundtracks. It will sound louder and richer compared to most 35mm prints and many digital sound systems, but because it is an older analog format, you will also hear the wear and tear of its many years going through projectors. Every hiss, softness, pop, intermittent silence and visual imperfection is part of the experience and a reminder that you are watching the exact same print many audience members saw projected across the country 40 years ago.
