The Josephine School Community Museum Book Club meets at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 28, to discuss “Slavery and Freedom in the Shenandoah Valley During the Civil War Era” by local historian Jonathan A. Noyalas. Professor Noyalas will attend to lead the discussion. NOTE: This special JSCM Book Club event is at the Barns of Rose Hill located at 95 Chalmers Ct. in Berryville. It is not necessary to read the book to attend today’s FREE discussion.
As the country marks the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, Dr. Noyalas will emphasize the tenuous nature of freedom and the roles Black people played in the war for emancipation.
Published in 2021, “Slavery and Freedom in the Shenandoah Valley During the Civil War Era” examines the complexities of life for African Americans in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley from the antebellum period through Reconstruction, showing how enslaved and free Blacks resisted slavery and supported the Union war effort in a borderland that changed hands frequently during the Civil War.
The book is available at libraries and book shops.
Contact the museum at (540) 955-5512, (540) 333-0692, or [email protected].
Contact the Barns at 540-955-2004 or [email protected].
