About Alroy ‘Bucky’ Baker
K’etximtn, Alroy Baker is a Squamish elder, weaver, language holder and knowledge keeper. Son of Alvie and Mazie Baker, Alroy was born and raised on traditional Skwxwu7mesh village of Eslhá7an. Since the age of 26 he has felt the call to share and help revitalize the Skwxwu7mesh language and culture. After learning to cedar weave from his teacher Tracey Williams, Alroy has dedicated his spare time to sharing this knowledge throughout his community. Bringing his weaving into the contemporary, Alroy has woven fedoras, baseball caps, rattles and water bottle sleeves. Through his longstanding commitment and service to the community, Bucky has been called to serve on the Squamish Nation Council once again and was recently appointed.
About Speaking Pictures
Speaking Pictures invites Indigenous elders to come and speak to the public about photographs that highlight the stories, histories, and landscapes of the North Shore. This program takes place on Sundays near each solstice. The changing of seasons is marked with gathering, storytelling and the sharing of food. The seasonal changes invite us to reflect on the past and grow into the future.
