Film has been a medium that has influenced people over the last 137 years. Generations have grown up watching film for informational, educational, and entertainment purposes. There are many different ways to view film with a critical eye. As a course taught at Danvers High, we explore how various historical people, events, and periods are depicted in film. After careful analysis of a specific historical topic, students compare the various degrees of accuracy of the film, messages of the films, and biases within the films. In this discussion we will discuss the types of films there are, how you analyze different films, and how it can impact both the students that take the course, but also adults as they look to navigate a deeper analysis of media in their own lives.
Lisa Trask, historian and educator, has been a resident in Danvers for the last 27 years. She has a MA in History and a MED in Special Education. She has been a member of the Historical Society for years, a board member since 2021, and she was elected as Secretary in 2025. She has worked at Danvers High School since 2013 and has taught History in Film as a course since 2019
