Speaker Event - Sentientism by Jamie Woodhouse

Jamie will give a talk introducing the foundational concepts behind Sentientism - which is a worldview that encourages us to extend moral considerations beyond humans to all beings capable of experiencing suffering or flourishing, including non-human animals and potentially future artificial or extraterrestrial sentient beings. At its heart is the principle that sentient beings should not be needlessly exploited, harmed or killed. Although these ideas have ancient and universal roots, applying them consistently challenges many accepted social norms and has potentially far-reaching implications. This philosophy encourages us to use evidence and rational thinking to understand what is real, rather than relying on faith, dogma or unchangeable beliefs, so is closely related to the humanist worldview but there are important differences.
