Normal Cinema Club is proud to present a double bill of space-age ambition and paranoia, featuring Conor Toner's EVERYTHING LOOKS SIMPLE FROM A DISTANCE and Matt Johnson's OPERATION AVALANCHE.

OPERATION AVALANCHE is a love letter to moon landing conspiracies, but also the analogue processes that enabled them - what if a bunch of film bros became embroiled in the depths of parapolitical CIA manoeuvering? Presented as a found-footage document chronicling the meticulous efforts and lengths that might have gone into faking the moon landing, OPERATION AVALANCHE is as sweet and funny as it is chilling. Turns out the walls can close in fast!

But what if the prospect of landing on the moon was not just an opportunity to symbolically crush your opponents and establish cultural hegemony, but a chance to reach across the divide and heal a wounded country? Our wee country even?

EVERYTHING LOOKS SIMPLE FROM A DISTANCE follows committed inventor and optimist Noah as he tries to persuade those in power that there is a simple solution to the so-called Troubles brewing: get Northern Ireland to be the first people on the moon, unite the people behind the march of progress. Strikingly original and bracingly honest about the thin line between ignorance and optimism that so many people tread in NI, ELSFAD (as the kids call it) won the LUMI Short Film Award at Belfast Film Festival 2023, and is currently nominated for the Iris Prize Best British Short award.

The Beanbag Cinema is a micro-cinema venue situated on the ground floor with a gender-neutral restroom. Please get in touch with any questions about accessibility. Doors will open at 6.45pm, with the first film beginning shortly after 7pm. There will be a short break before the feature. This is a strictly 18+ event.
