SPARK YOUR SKILLS: Free Electrical Repair Workshops, SESSION 9
About this Event
SPARK YOUR SKILLS - FREE ELECTRICAL REPAIR WORKSHOPS
This summer, we’re launching a rolling program of Electrical Repair Workshops at BASELINE Studios, delivered in partnership with the Repair Rooms and Lancaster West Neighbourhood Team.
Designed for residents of North Kensington, these hands-on sessions will introduce the foundations of safe electrical repair and DIY maintenance at home. Participants will learn practical skills to diagnose and repair everyday household items, helping to reduce waste, save money, and build confidence in tackling common electrical issues.
For those keen to develop their skills further, the workshops also offer a pathway to becoming involved in local community repair initiatives, with opportunities to get experience in Repair Cafés around London.
Whether you're a complete beginner or simply curious about repair, these workshops are a great way to learn new skills and connect with your local community.

SESSION 9 -
Maintain-eering - Prevention is better than cure!
Listening, lubricating, cleaning…how to extend the life of our devices.
It’s not uncommon in the repair world for people to bring us an item - say, a vacuum cleaner - and report that it started to make a different noise six months ago, and then started to smell bad about a month ago…and now it’s stopped working…which likely means burned out parts that will need replacing. This could have almost certainly been prevented if action had been taken when the sound started to change.
During this hands-on workshop we’ll explore a range of simple techniques to ensure our consumer electricals don’t get seized or clogged up and can stay away from the repair bench.
We’ll cover:
- When and where to use WD-40, oil, grease, contact cleaner and a range of other specialist products
- Descaling
- Tracking down the key parts to unclog
- Dust and lint removal techniques
- Correct cleaning agents to use on different materials
Regular maintenance significantly reduces the likelihood of costly repairs and extends the life of our stuff, but we’ve simply got out of the habit of it. We clean and service our cars and bicycles…so why not our home appliances?
For some, maintenance might seem a little dull, but it’s actually one of the most important activities in the world: we don’t wait for bridges to collapse, we maintain them. This is why we like to call it ‘maintaineering’ because we believe this work is heroic.
