The Eureka Chamber Music Series' final concert set of 2026 is coming up on the weekend before Thanksgiving. The Spark Piano Trio is made up of familiar faces, but in a fresh artistic collaboration. ECMS Artistic Director and violinist Tom Stone is joined by Avery Fisher Career Grant winning cellist Sophie Shao, and pianist, fortepianist, and composer Eric Zivian. The Mainstage Concert will take place on Saturday, November 21st at 7:30 p.m. at Calvary Lutheran Church in Eureka. Repertoire for the evening includes the hauntingly beautiful Trio élégiaque No. 1 in G minor by Sergei Rachmaninoff, the profound Piano Trio No. 2 in E minor, Op. 67 by Dmitri Shostakovich, and closing with Felix Mendelssohn’s passionate Piano Trio No. 2 in C minor, Op. 66.
On the following afternoon, the trio will perform a more casual Concert and Conversation on Sunday, November 22nd at 3:00 p.m. at The Lutheran Church of Arcata. This concert will feature Beethoven's Piano Trio in G major, Opus 1, No. 2, with the added attraction of Zivian's copy of a nineteenth-century fortepiano that he will bring to Humboldt from Sonoma. The delicate and expressive fortepiano is the precursor to the modern piano and is the kind of instrument Beethoven himself would have played. The local audience will have the rare opportunity to hear a superb chamber work by Beethoven as the composer himself would have heard it when he composed and published the work in 1795. The hour-long event will include an insightful dialogue between the artists and the audience, moderated as always by Tom Stone.
Season Tickets for the remaining Eureka Chamber Music Series concerts will remain on sale through the November concert weekend. Single concert tickets are also on sale now, and any remaining tickets will be sold at the door before each concert. Mainstage Concert tickets are $40 general and $10 for students. Concert and Conversation tickets are $20 general and $5 for students. As always, purchasing tickets in advance is recommended for this long-established concert series.
