Bill Gurley has been diagnosed with Cardiogenic Shock which is a medical emergency resulting from inadequate blood flow to the body’s organs due to heart dysfunction. Bill was sent to the Grand Rapids Heart Failure Clinic on August 22nd for an evaluation. Due to his deteriorating health, the doctor immediately had him admitted to the Advanced Cardiac Heart Unit at Spectrum Butterworth Hospital, where he is still at and will be for an undetermined amount of time. He went through several procedures, tests and labs and evaluations. Through careful consideration the doctor’s decided Bill’s only options are either go on Hospice or be placed on the Heart Transplant List. If Bill chooses no intervention his mortality rate is 6 months. With a Heart Transplant Bill’s mortality rate is 13 years. That is 13 years with his family and friends that absolutely mean the world to him, as well as 13 more years of being with the love of his life, Darla. A Heart Transplant is a major surgery that will require a 24/7 caregiver for at least 30 days if not longer as well as extensive education to care for Bill. Due to these requirements Darla has had to resign at her current place of employment. The only income they have is Bill’s social security until my mom can qualify for social security benefits. Bill only has Medicare for insurance which covers 80 % of hospitalizations and surgeries. He is in the process of applying for Medicaid.
Our family is humbly asking for your support during this difficult time. We are having Spaghetti Benefit Dinner on September 21st at the Kalkasksa Moose Lodge (2210 M-66, Kalkaska, MI 49680) from 4pm-8pm. The cost is $10 per person. There will be a 50/50 Raffle as well as a Silent Auction.
