How frequently do planetary systems comparable to our own solar system form, and how do these systems develop over time? The past two decades of exoplanetary research has now revealed thousands of worlds around nearby stars, and hundreds of dusty, scaled-up versions of our asteroid belt. However, the vast majority of these planets and dust belts have properties quite unlike those in the solar system.
