About the Documentary:
Soviet Bus Stops is a poignant exploration of these architectural anomalies, built quietly against the backdrop of stringent state control. Shot over seven years, the documentary follows Herwig's quest to uncover the stories behind these creations. Despite their cultural significance, many of these bus stops face demolition or neglect today, making Herwig's documentation all the more vital.
Join us as we delve into the narratives of the creators themselves, from Ukraine to Lithuania, revealing their acts of artistic defiance within a rigid system. Herwig's journey not only celebrates these structures as architectural gems but also as poignant symbols of individual expression amidst state uniformity.
“The bus stops are disappearing so fast. If I come back a year from now, they could be gone, demolished, or rebuilt. These pictures may be all that’s left in the end. I want to give them some kind of immortality.”
— Christopher Herwig, Photographer and Bus Stop Hunter
