Her career began in the mid-90s in Central Scotland, where she ensured compliance with the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations for a leading plumbing, heating, and roofing company. In 2012, she immigrated to New Zealand and played a key role in health and safety during the Canterbury Residential Rebuild post-earthquakes.
In July 2016, Gillian joined Mike Greer Homes as the Canterbury Health and Safety Manager, advancing to National Health and Safety Manager and then to Group Health and Safety Manager. She is accredited through NZISM and HASANZ and is committed to promoting health and safety excellence across all projects.

Matthew Bennett from Dendrite – Traffic Management
After leaving school, where he specialised in absenteeism and chaos, with a sideline in kayaking, Matthew disappeared to Europe where he discovered Outward Bound would pay him to pursue what school said was “diverting him from a successful future”.
A pivotal event when he was in his twenties changed the trajectory of his work. He’d been running a multi-day caving course deep underground, and had to coach a young adult down a 40m abseil. This person was a big lad (much bigger than Matt) and very scared. Upon returning to the office, he found a fax (now he’s showing his age) that read, “person ‘x’ is mandated by the police to attend the course as part of his diversion. He has aggressive tendencies and can become violent when under stress or cornered”.
At this point Matt realised that safety was more than a function of individual choices and actions, and that it required the alignment of multiple pieces into a coherent system.
Since then, Matthew has worked on five continents, undertaking audits and incident investigations in manufacturing, demolition, quarrying and power generation. He’s worked in industrial rope access, as a tree feller for a wildlands firefighting crew, and been a WorkSafe Health and Safety Inspector. He is now the Principle Consultant for Dendrite Risk Ltd.
Matthew is an NZISM professional member and HASANZ registered. He endeavours to not let his work or profession hold him back from going ‘where there is no cell phone coverage’, to take (well informed and planned) risks and feed his soul.
This promises to be a really valuable and engaging session, and we very much look forward to seeing you all on Friday morning.
