'Southern Cities Architecture, Part 2: Savannah & Charleston' Webinar

The American South is the location of some of the oldest and most historically significant cities in the United States. From tidewater Virginia to the mouth of the Mississippi, these centers were hubs of commerce, culture, and an economy based on enslavement — before and after the American Civil War. It's time to explore the cities of the American South and uncover their influence on American forms of government, society, and life.

Join New York Adventure Club for a three-part series on the history of Southern cities and their architecture, where we'll examines the buildings and structures that have shaped history since colonial times. In Part Two: Savannah & Charleston, we'll visit two of the great cities of the Low Country; one a former plantation center, and the other, one of America's earliest planned cities.

Led by architectural historian David V. Griffin of Landmark Branding, this digital showcase featuring a selection of unique structures will include:

• A brief overview of the city's earliest surviving buildings
• A close look at the development of the Charleston “piazza” house
• The genius behind Savannah’s Oglethorpe Plan
• The glorious Wormsloe Allee: a titanic avenue lined with live oaks
• The age of historic preservation in both cities
• An in-depth look at each building's construction, context, and current status, with a focus on how culture and innovation drive architectural symbolism

Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with David — any and all questions about these unique buildings are welcomed and encouraged!
