Join Nature Guelph Bird Wing on Thursday, September 4, 2025 from 7:30-9:00 pm for an engaging presentation from shorebird enthusiast Jean Iron on the southbound migration of shorebirds. From the end of June to freeze-up, southbound migrant shorebirds from the Canadian Arctic stop over in southern Ontario. This presentation gives tips to identify and age southbound shorebirds, including how to distinguish Long-billed and Short-billed Dowitchers. There will be suggestions for places to see southbound shorebirds in southern Ontario.
This event will be hosted in person at Wild Birds Unlimited Guelph (987 Gordon St, Guelph, ON).
About the Speaker:
Jean Iron is a well-known Ontario birder who was president of the Ontario Field Ornithologists for 9 years and a former editor of OFO News. In 2016, she received the OFO Distinguished Ornithologist Award for her significant contributions to the scientific study of birds in Ontario and Canada and for being a resource to the club and the Ontario birding community. Her special interests are shorebirds, gulls, bird identification, geese and grassland birds of the Carden Alvar. Jean has led adventure tours for Quest Nature Tours to many places including Antarctica and High Arctic Canada. The extensive mudflats of Ontario's James Bay coast are of hemispheric importance to staging and migrating shorebirds. Jean’s passion for shorebirds and conservation took her to remote James and Hudson Bays from 2002-2018 to survey shorebirds with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (OMNR), Royal Ontario Museum (ROM), and Canadian Wildlife Service (CWS).
