Southbound will present a retrospective of “At Fillmore East,” the Allman Brothers Band’s first live album, released in 1971. Recorded over three nights at the Fillmore East in New York City, this album marked a pivotal artistic breakthrough for the Allman Brothers, significantly enhancing their popularity and earning recognition as one of the greatest live albums in rock history. It achieved Platinum certification and was preserved in the Library of Congress for its cultural significance.
“At Fillmore East” showcases the Allman Brothers Band’s distinctive blend of blues, rock, country, and jazz. The album opens with Duane Allman’s slide guitar on “Statesboro Blues,” followed by “Done Somebody Wrong.” “Stormy Monday” features impressive guitar solos and transitions into a swinging rhythm. “You Don’t Love Me” introduces jazz-inspired improvisations, while “Hot ‘Lanta” emphasizes Berry Oakley’s masterful bass work. “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed” draws comparisons to John Coltrane, and “Whipping Post” culminates in an extended jam filled with intricate solos, remaining one of the band’s most popular encore selections through their final performances in 2014.
