Biodanza is a world renowned movement and personal development practice based on music, dance and connection - it was created in the 1970s by Rolando Toro Araneda a philosopher, poet, anthropologist and psychiatrist from Chile.
Because body feelings are often neglected, if we move expressively, letting go of our thoughts - we can increase our awareness of feelings in the body. 𝑻𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒄𝒂𝒏 𝒉𝒆𝒍𝒑 𝒕𝒐 𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒈𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒏 𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒓𝒆𝒍𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒑 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒔𝒆𝒍𝒇.
Increasing our body awareness helps us be more sensitive to our own and others feelings and the choices we make to rest or
engage - in Biodanza this is known as 𝒃𝒆𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒇𝒆𝒆𝒅𝒃𝒂𝒄𝒌 and 𝒔𝒆𝒍𝒇-𝒓𝒆𝒈𝒖𝒍𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏.
In Biodanza the music is our vehicle - if we are open to it, and with the right conditions - 𝒎𝒖𝒔𝒊𝒄 𝒄𝒂𝒏 𝒎𝒐𝒗𝒆 𝒖𝒔 𝒃𝒐𝒕𝒉 𝒑𝒉𝒚𝒔𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒚 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒆𝒎𝒐𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒚.
In Biodanza 𝒘𝒆 𝒔𝒆𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝒔𝒆𝒆𝒔 𝒖𝒔. This is sharing presence - it’s simple and can also be very powerful!
When we dance and connect affectively, this releases
serotonin
endorphins
dopamine
and oxytocin.
These can change our state of mind, body and even deeper at soul level - 𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒉𝒂𝒑𝒑𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒔𝒔, 𝒑𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒖𝒓𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒂𝒕 𝒕𝒊𝒎𝒆𝒔 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒄𝒆𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒇𝒆𝒆𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝒑𝒂𝒊𝒏.
Biodanza can help us to to 𝒓𝒆-𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒏 𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒄𝒂𝒑𝒂𝒄𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒍𝒐𝒗𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒂𝒄𝒄𝒆𝒑𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆.
Through increasing body awareness and expression - Biodanza can 𝒆𝒙𝒑𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒂𝒃𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝒕𝒐 𝒏𝒖𝒓𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆 𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒅𝒆𝒆𝒑𝒆𝒔𝒕 𝒅𝒆𝒔𝒊𝒓𝒆𝒔, and to 𝒈𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝒖𝒔 𝒂 𝒃𝒐𝒐𝒔𝒕 𝒕𝒐𝒘𝒂𝒓𝒅 𝒍𝒊𝒗𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒅𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒎𝒔.
Regular attendance is encouraged - but everyone is welcome to try and no dance experience is necessary. If you are someone who has ever enjoyed the feeling of music moving you - then you are likely to love and want to discover more of.
𝗔𝗴𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁
In the session the group will gradually together create a state of deep relaxation and on occasion explore themes such as sensual movement and affective touch- for this reason the events are limited to adults only. Biodanza is also beneficial for children to help build relational and creative skills - please keep in touch with this group to hear more about future Biodanza events dedicated especially for families.
𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗖𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗲
I facilitate a monthly Biodanza class in Southampton at Bitterne United Reformed Church usually the first Friday of each month from 7pm onwards. The Church hall is a beautiful space - with the entrance just up the ramp from Iceland supermarket.

𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬
𝗣𝘂𝗻𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 - We will start the session at 7.15pm (and at this point we may need to lock the front door) - do help yourself to a cup of tea in the kitchen as you arrive from 7.00pm onwards.
If you arrive after 7.15pm and the door is locked - please ring the bell it is to the right of
𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗲𝗮𝗿 - Wear light and loose clothing, which you will feel comfortable to move in.
𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 - Bring a water bottle and a cushion for any parts when we might sit on the floor.
𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗵𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 - Afterward please stay for teas, fruit and chat (participants are welcome to bring and share). Kitchen facilities are available for afterward. Please wash up and then put away all utensils.
