South Side Baseball Tour — Five Stadiums. Two Teams. One Storied Ground.
About this Event
Most people who park in Lot L on game day have no idea what they're walking across.
The South Side of Chicago is arguably one of the most historically significant baseball neighborhoods in America. Two teams. One hundred and twenty-five years. The White Sox and the Chicago American Giants — both called this ground home. The stories are still here.
The tour begins at an elementary school whose name change two years ago was newsworthy — for a reason that has everything to do with baseball, community, and who deserves to be remembered.
You'll hear about a Chicago mayor whose story is more surprising than you'd expect.
Come walk the same ground where Babe Ruth, Shoeless Joe Jackson, Satchel Paige, Mickey Mantle, and Jackie Robinson made history.
The South Side Baseball Tour tells those stories — on the ground where they happened.
This is a 90–120 minute walking tour led by a Bridgeport resident who lives two blocks from Rate Field. You'll stand on the exact spots where history was made. You'll hear stories that aren't in any guidebook. And by the time it's over, you'll never look at this neighborhood the same way again.
WHAT YOU'LL EXPERIENCE:
We cover the White Sox and the Chicago American Giants — two teams, one neighborhood, one storied ground. From 1900 to last week. From the first professional game played on this ground to the near-perfect game thrown here recently.
You'll stand on the actual home plate where legendary moments in baseball history occurred. You'll walk past a firehouse connected to one of the most remarkable stories in Chicago political history. You'll see a 400-foot mural under a viaduct that now includes a Pope in a White Sox cap. You'll stand on the footprint of a dynasty most of the world never knew about — a team that won championships while America's radio stations pretended they didn't exist.
You'll hear about the scout who came to this neighborhood in August 1945 and slipped a bellman two dollars so a Black man could ride an elevator — and what happened three weeks later.
You'll hear about the mayor who made a phone call in December 1975 that kept this franchise in Chicago. About the organist who invented the walk-up song. About the boxer who knocked out the heavyweight champion of the world on this ground while 45,000 people watched. About the Cuban immigrant who took a name that wasn't his, walked into the wrong dentist's room and walked out with a nickname an entire city would know for the rest of the century.
And you'll end at the World Series monument — with the Chicago skyline behind you and 125 years of history behind you.
No spoilers. Show up and find out.
Cubs fans — you're welcome here too. You might be surprised what this neighborhood has to do with your team's history.
And if you think this is just a baseball tour — The Beatles and Michael Jackson have a connection to this ground too.
