Join us this summer for a concert series celebrating the remarkable 250-year influence of Moravian music on the American sound.
June 13, 2:00 PM | In Honor of Peter Oliver
Celebrate the life of Peter Oliver through music created on the historic Tannenberg Organ where Oliver once worked pumping the very same bellows used today. Performed by soprano Daniele Olsen and organists Timothy Olsen and Jonathan Williams.
June 27, 2:00 PM | Moravian Chamber Music
Experience the Moravian influence on early American chamber music through selections from the Moravian Music Foundation archives. Performance by flutist Kinard Douthit and organist Jonathan Williams.
July 4, 3:00 PM | Psalm of Joy
Celebrate America’s 250th anniversary with a performance of Johann Friedrich Peter’s Psalm of Joy (1783), composed for Salem’s first Independence Day celebration. The piece reflects the Moravian tradition of music as both worship and shared experiences remaining one of the earliest American anthems following the conclusion of the Revolutionary War. Performance by the Moramus Chorale, led by Amanda Moody-Schumpert with accompaniment by Mary Louise Kapp Peeples on the Tannenberg organ.
July 18, 2:00 PM | Evolution of the American Keyboard
Featuring organ, harpsichord, clavichord, melodeon, and piano, the concert connects early Moravian traditions to later American innovations, including influences that culminate in works like George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. Performed by Myron D. Brown, Barbara Lister-Sink, Dreama Lovitt, and Timothy Olsen.
Tickets may be purchased online or at the door for $10. All concerts to take place in James A. Gray Auditorium in the Visitor Center.
