Turn trash into tunes! Build a working speaker from found materials with sound artist Nelly Kate. All ages and skill levels welcome.
About this Event

In this playful, hands-on workshop, you'll discover that almost anything can be turned into a speaker — a tin can, a scrap of wood, a found object from the recycling bin. Led by sound artist Nelly Kate, you'll explore how different materials shape and change sound, and leave with a working speaker you built yourself. No audio engineering background needed — just curiosity and a willingness to tinker.

What We’ll Cover

🔊 Build a working speaker cabinet from salvaged or everyday materials
♻️ Understand how audio components work and how to power them
🗑️ Explore how different materials — wood, metal, found objects — affect tone and sound
🔧 Disassemble and tinker with old speakers to see what's inside
🎧 Compare sounds made by different enclosures and trust your own ear

Make-and-Take Home

You'll build your very own speaker from scrap and salvaged materials — and walk out the door with it playing music. Bring a found object you'd love to hear come alive.

Come Prepared

No experience needed — all skill levels, ages, and backgrounds welcome!

Optional: bring a found object (a tin can, wooden box, mason jar, or other container) that you'd like to try as a speaker cabinet.
