About Cecile Emeke:
Cecile Emeke is a Black British and Jamaican filmmaker, who is currently celebrating 10 years of her creative practice across broadcast television, independent film and artist's moving image, within documentary, comedy and experimental cinema. Her work often explores time, cosmology and cultural production, through the prism of the black diasporic experience, within liminal spaces and intimate settings. A decade ago, Emeke broke the internet with ACKEE & SALTFISH and STROLLING, which led to her directing HBO’s INSECURE, Idris Elba’s IN THE LONG RUN, and the Tate Modern commission THE ANCESTORS CAME, on the life and work of the New York native Faith Ringgold. Emeke is currently coming to the end of development on her debut narrative feature film NO TELEPHONE TO HEAVEN, a Black diasporic odyssey that blends speculative fiction with contemporary magical realism, set in a time on the Earth where only Black people exist and immortality has existed for so long, that both death and other races are regarded as mythological conspiracy theories from ancient, less advanced civilisations. Cecile’s continued diverse practice embodies a commitment to dexterity and multiplicity in an industry that often imposes singularity and conformity, particularly on Black women.
