Hey, you gotta be here! Please join us for SoulFood Poetry Night at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 18, 2026, at SoulFood CoffeeHouse at 15748 Redmond Way in Redmond, Washington. Tonight’s poets are the youngest featured readers we’ve ever had at SoulFood Poetry Night: Teenagers JANAE LU and CHARLOTTE (LOTTIE) SOLIVEN. Please bring your own poems for our open mic. Admission is FREE.
Looking ahead: On July 16, SoulFood Poetry Night celebrates its 20th anniversary with an extra hour of open-mic readings. If you’ve ever featured at SoulFood, you’re especially invited to come help us celebrate!
JANAE LU explores the nuances of transition, identity, and self-discovery through free-verse poetry and creative prose. She was the 2024–2025 Seattle youth poet laureate and a member of Seattle Arts and Lectures Youth Poetry Fellowship, and is a senior at Tesla STEM High School. Her debut collection, In All Spaces Liminal, published by Poetry Northwest, meditates on the existential thresholds we occupy between past and future, presence and absence, belonging and detachment.
CHARLOTTE (LOTTIE) SOLIVEN is a junior at Liberty High School who grew up believing she could change the world. In her 18 years of living, she has done just that by fearlessly breaking Asian stereotypes with her inability to do basic mental math and her European-sounding name. Her other talents include being the lead singer in the band PB and Jellyfish, crying in public, winning plushies from claw machines, being the only cheerleader who can’t cartwheel, and relentlessly insisting that poetry is cool to the kids at Camp Yesler and her high school peers.
