This is really two stories in one: the extraordinary music of Hammond B3 Hall of Fame legend Chris Foreman — and the 43-year friendship and musical partnership between Foreman and drummer Greg Rockingham.
When the Soul Message Band first played Studio5 in 2022, the reaction was immediate and unanimous: OH. MY. GOD. It felt like the roof might lift clean off the building.
Chris Foreman is a true giant of the B3 organ — powerful, soulful, and electrifying. The reason this band sounds so astonishingly tight is no mystery: Foreman and Rockingham have been musical brothers for 43 years.
Blind at birth, Foreman began playing piano at five and studying formally at seven. As a teenager he was drawn to the organ masters — Jack McDuff, Groove Holmes, Jimmy Smith, Jimmy McGriff — and pursued the instrument through deep study of recordings. The result is a thrilling blend of blues-gospel fire and jazz sophistication. His career has included work with Hank Crawford, Albert Collins, Bernard Purdie, The Mighty Blue Kings, and Deep Blue Organ Trio.
Joining this powerhouse duo is the dynamic young saxophonist Greg Jung, bringing fresh energy to an already blazing ensemble.
