Performances, exhibitions and installations will be presented by local creative partners including Nablus Arabic Culture Association, the Arab Women’s Union, Suji Varma and Firadelic, Jan-Inge Ljungberg and Bad People Good Animals, with others to be annouced.
ORGANIZED BY
Guided by the concept of Sonic Citizenship, those varied processes through which people create a sense of belonging by creating and experiencing sound in different ways, the Sonic Citizens event is part of a continuing collaboration between the NGBG culture association and Malmö University exploring how practices of inclusive listening can bring the municipality, commercial and non-commercial cultural actors into spaces of critical reflection that can support equitable and sustainable urban transition within the Sofielund Industrial area.
BACKGROUND
Established in 2021 the culture sound zone is an urban development initiative by the city of Malmö that “aims to promote a vibrant and dynamic city. Where, local cultural life can continue to grow without the risk of being displaced by housing development or strict noise regulations” https://malmo.se/Stadsutveckling/Sa-utvecklar-vi-staden/Stadsmiljo/Kulturljudzonen-i-Sofielund-och-NGBG.html.
Within the culture sound zone culture producers and industry can make more noise than would be permitted in other parts of the city. Five years after its creation the culture sound zone remains a subject of intense debate as non-commercial culture, commercial culture and the municipality work together to explore its possibilities and limitations.
Sonic Citizens is part of the LISTEN project https://mau.se/en/research/projects/listen/ with generous support from the Sound Environment Centre. LSITEN is funded by the Driving Urban Transitions Partnership.
