About this Event

Song of the Lost River
Song of the Lost River is a powerful play based on the life of Gulab Bai, the first woman to enter the male-dominated world of nautanki, a traditional North Indian folk theatre. Born into the bedia community—historically displaced and labeled as a criminal tribe during colonial rule—Gulab faced deep-rooted social stigma, gender discrimination, and emotional struggles. Yet, she rose to national and international fame, winning several prestigious awards.
The play portrays her unwavering passion for singing and her fight to earn dignity for women in performing arts. Despite personal losses and alienation, Gulab remains pure and resolute, embodying strength and simplicity. Her journey, though marked by pain, reflects her indomitable spirit.
Interwoven with her story are the lives of her family, highlighting a broader narrative of marginalization, oppression, and the challenges faced by women from disadvantaged communities. The play also critiques patriarchal norms and questions the belief that technology-driven modernization benefits all. With the rise of cinema, traditional performers like the bedias lost their livelihoods.
Through Gulab’s life, Song of the Lost River urges a deeper reflection on Indian society, its treatment of marginalized groups, and the need to value cultural heritage and gender equality.
Don’t miss Song of the Lost River—a spellbinding musical that blends live singing, captivating dance, and stellar performances by some of the fine artists, to bring to life the inspiring story of Gulab Bai, India’s first female nautanki artiste. Written by Atamjit, an award-winning playwright and recipient of both the Sahitya Akademi and Sangeet Natak Akademi awards, this powerful play explores themes of courage, identity, and social injustice. Witness the emotional journey of a woman who broke barriers to pursue her passion and dignity in a male-dominated world. A rich theatrical experience that celebrates folk art, resilience, and the indomitable human spirit—this is a show you’ll never forget.
