Your Prince and Princess greet you fondly!
Looming large before us is our promotion to kingdom status, which will take place effective May 2nd, when we will hold the royal tournament to choose and then immediately crown our first king and queen. See the link above for more details about our first Royal Tournament and Coronation (RTC).
We have been quite vocal in our hopes that this will be our Society’s largest-ever royal tournament, and so today we are now calling for letters of intent from those desiring to earn the right in years to come to brag of having competed to be our first king. So make hay while the sun shines! Begin today to repair and burnish your armor, come to accord with your consort, train for the day of honor, and declare to us your intent to fight for the honor of Solumbria, your consort, and yourself.
Solumbria law requires that entrants in the royal tournament must have a consort of the opposite sex who will rule with them if they win. Fighters and their consorts must:
· Be acceptable to the Coronet.
· Be paid members of the Society of the Middle Ages, Inc.
· Be 18 years of age or older as of the date of RTC.
· Hold at least the rank of Knight Bachelor in one of the orders of knighthood of the SMA.
· Live within the borders of Solumbria and be able to demonstrate a reasonable level of participation.
· Have names and armory registered with the College of Arms.
· The combatant must own his own armor, weapons, and other equipment.
We do have some authority to dispense from some of these requirements. Please contact us directly if you would like to apply for a waiver. However, we cannot dispense from both the membership and knighthood requirements. So if you meet one of those requirements but not the other, we can talk.
Your letter of intent should be sent to both ourselves and the High Chancellor: [email protected] and [email protected]. The letter of intent should include the following elements for both the entrant and consort:
· Persona names.
· Legal names.
· Addresses.
· Telephone numbers.
· E-mail addresses.
· Membership number.
Again, according to law, letters of intent are due no later than 21 days in advance of the tournament, which is April 11th. However, the earlier we receive your letter, the better pleased we will be with it.
It is not necessary that you publish your letter of intent on social media, but you are certainly free to do so.
The tournament will be conducted with the weapons of chivalry, that is, rattan weapons, in accordance with the Marshal’s Handbook published by the SMA’s Society Earl Marshal. The precise format of the tournament will be decided when we know better how many combatants there will be, but we plan no novelty requirements, nor do we expect anyone to be surprised.
The victor in the tournament and his consort will be crowned as Solumbria’s first king and queen the same day. Your reign will last for a full year, just as ours will have done. You will have the support and encouragement of the officers, royal family, and people of Solumbria.
We believe that the number of combatants in this tournament will be a sign of the health of our new kingdom. We are therefore confident that the size of the list will show the strength of Solumbria, and we look to you, our subjects, to achieve this.
