Loving a country that doesn't fully claim you. Built through grief, betrayal, distance, and love. That's where this collection was born.
About this Event

A Tourist in My Own Country is the debut solo exhibition from Canadian-American-Haitian artist and architectural designer Aschbel Joseph — a collection years in the making, rooted in one of the most defining experiences of her life.

In 2010, the earthquake in Haiti displaced Aschbel from the country that made her. Six years later she returned with a camera, walking streets she once knew, expecting to feel home. Instead she felt like a stranger. That tension — loving a place that no longer fully claims you — became the heartbeat of everything in this collection.

Through painting, photography, mixed media, and glasswork, A Tourist in My Own Country explores identity, memory, and belonging. It is a love letter to Haiti. A document of displacement. And a voice for every member of the diaspora who has ever felt caught between the country they came from and the country they live in.

This is not just Aschbel's story. As she says herself — it is her story, his story, and history.
