About this Event
Join us to learn the basics of soldering for electronics repair! This class will focus on general soldering skills for DIY home electronics fixers and those wanting to know the basics.
Soldering is a skill which can elevate your ability to fix electronics and small appliances. We hope this class will help empower you to dive deeper into repairs and break the knowledge & intimidation barrier around soldering.
This class is for everyone, especially those who:
- have never seen a soldering iron before and are unsure how to pronounce "soldering" but want to learn more!
- repair some home appliances but aren't sure how to replace connections and circuits!
- have done some soldering in the past but want to learn how to apply it to DIY small appliance repairs!
- want a refresher of your soldering skills!
This workshop will be taught by our skilled instructor and repair volunteer, Alex, who also taught our workshop about adhesives in November! The course will include:
- An overview of when soldering is necessary for a DIY repair
- A basic soldering demonstration using different types of solders suited to different situations
- Understanding the purpose and use of Flux
- Learning about coating wires
- Demonstrations and hands-on practice replacing a circuit, including removal, cleanup, and soldering the new connection.
- Practice time to work with large and small parts: you may use provided practice items or bring in your own repair!
We will provide all the necessary materials as well as practice items to work on.
If you have anything electrical that you believe has an issue with a soldering component, please bring it into the class (ideally with the replacement part) so we can work on it during the class!
If you have a personal soldering iron, you can also bring this in & practice using your own tools.
Note on Sliding Scale Pricing:
Repair PDX seeks to both pay equitably and keep ticket prices accessible.
Not every event we run is independently solvent. We provide sliding scale, free tickets for volunteers, and other low cost opportunities because of our values. Thus, we rely on those with more financial support to pay the higher end of the sliding scale in order to offset the low-cost tickets. Thus, you will see a variety of ticket prices for the same event and we encourage you to pay what you can.
Proceeds from tickets go directly to paying our wonderful instructors, providing materials for the class, and continuing to host events and workshops like this one!
*If you are a volunteer wanting to join the class or needing a accessible ticket when there are none tickets left, please email [email protected] so we can open one up for you.
