Learn the art of Pysanky Egg with the Indiana Art Association and our guest instructor, Sharon Stoika-Smay!

What are Pysanky Eggs?
Pysanky are traditional Ukrainian Easter eggs decorated using batik, a wax-resist method. Using a stylus called a kistka, you'll create designs on your egg with hot beeswax. Then, your eggs are immersed into specialized dyes until complete.
These eggs are typically made in spring, featuring symbolic folk motifs in vibrant colors that, when finished, represent life, protection, and good fortune.
The deadline to sign up is March 16, 2026.

When, where, and how much?
This class will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2026 at The Artists Hand Gallery and Espresso Bar, located at 732 Philadelphia Street, Indiana, PA.
Class is 10am to 3pm with a one-hour lunch break. Feel free to bring something along, dine in at The Artists Hand Gallery & Espresso Bar, or explore Downtown Indiana.
The cost is $50 for IAA Members and $65 for non-members.
Please note, the sign-up deadline is Monday, March 16, 2026. No refunds will be issued after this date.
There is free and metered parking in the lot behind the gallery.

What supplies do I need?
Sharon will provide all materials for making your eggs.

Is there an age minimum?
Any student 10+ are welcome, however, all students under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

About Sharon Stoika-Smay:
Sharon’s journey with Pysanky began in 2011, when her sister and she signed up for lessons at an Orthodox Church in Conemaugh. Since their ethnic background is Eastern European, it was an art form that always interested her. She was then hooked!
She is passionate about preserving and promoting the history and traditions associated with Pysanky that have existed for many hundreds of years.
Although there are more modern approaches, she teaches the traditional method using a candle, beeswax, and a stylus called a kistka.
There are different types of Pysanky, but she teaches the wax resist method where the design is written in wax, then immersed in specialized dyes until it is completed. The wax is finally removed to reveal the design. These real eggs are emptied and sealed, and will keep for many, many years.
She looks forward to sharing the tradition of Pysanky, introducing you to the process that preserves and showcases this beautiful ancient art form.
