SOLARIS was one of Akira Kurosawa's favourite films. Steven Soderbergh remade it. Salman Rushdie called it an "exploration of the unreliability of reality and the power of the human unconscious."

Legendary Russian director Andrei Tarkovsky wasn't a fan of sci-fi, but decided to adapt StanisΕaw Lem's 1961 novel partly to get around Soviet censors and partly as a response to 2001: A Space Odyssey - which he called "lifeless" and "phoney"! Following Solaris, he returned to sci-fi a few years later with the astonishing Stalker (which we screened in 2019). Believe it or not, Solaris is one of Tarkovsky's more accessible films - join us at our June screening for a rare chance to see this haunting, weird epic in a cinema.
