Soil Squad Collective
About this Event
Soil Squad helps turn everyday food waste into more nutritious soil.
We already do this from our community composting hub in St Albans. Now we want to explore how more people, schools, allotments, businesses, faith groups and community spaces could get involved.
Come along to a free workshop, learn something new and help us explore what Soil Squad could look like mapped across St Albans.
First, discover how to ferment your food waste
We'll start with a practical introduction to Bokashi Compost, a simple way of fermenting food waste that means even cooked food, dairy, meat and fish can be composted rather than thrown away.
We'll show you how it works, what happens to the food waste afterwards and how we use it as part of our composting process.
You don't need any composting experience. You don't even need a garden.
Then, help us grow a Soil Squad Collective
We're interested in where food waste is being generated, where compost could be made and used, what spaces might be available and, most importantly, who would like to play a part.
- Could your business collect food waste?
- Could your church, school allotment or community centre host a hot composter?
- Could a local business support a community composting hub?
- Do you have gardening or composting knowledge to share?
- Could you volunteer a couple of hours a week to compost?
- Or do you simply know people we should be speaking to?
You don't need to arrive with an answer. Come with your ideas, experience, questions and local knowledge.
Who should come?
Anyone.
You might be an interested resident, gardener or allotment holder. You might represent a school, business, community organisation or place of worship. You might already compost or know absolutely nothing about it.
You might have a space, some time, useful knowledge, food waste or connections.
Or you might just think this sounds like something good happening in St Albans and want to find out more.
What you'll leave with
You'll learn a practical way to deal with food waste at home, understand more about the connection between food waste and healthy soil and meet other people interested in doing something positive locally.
You'll also have the chance to help shape the next stage of Soil Squad Collective.
We're looking for volunteers, supporters, hosts and connectors who can help us make community composting easier to access across St Albans.
Join our Squad for a greener, healthier, happier St Albans.
Volunteer. Support. Host. Connect.
This Soil Squad project is supported by St Albans District Council and Cllr Matt Fisher's Locality Budget.
