Many of Portland’s older neighborhoods have high lead levels in soil near older homes because of past use and unsafe removal of exterior lead-based paint on housing. Lead in soil is a common exposure pathway for small children. The Multnomah County Health Department will test soil samples for lead with a 10-20 second X-ray analysis and provide information on how to safely manage lead in soil. Participants can bring up to 3 separate soil samples from different locations in the yard. Each sample should be about 1/2 cup of dry, preferably sifted soil in a Ziplock bag labeled with the collection location. The Health Department’s subject matter expert on lead poisoning prevention will be available to answer your questions.
