It’s time to return to Banner! It’s a bit of a drive down to Banner Lakes, but the uniqueness of this trail should be make it worthwhile. From Hwy 69, turn east on Elk Horn Avenue. Then immediately turn right into the park. Drive until you reach the only T-intersection in the park. Right here is the third lot in and it has a boat ramp. We will leave from there at 10:00 a.m.
Our walk will use some road, but will be primarily a tour of the trail named Coal Miner’s Daughter. The total mileage will be about 2.7 miles.
If the dirt trail is muddy, we will walk only on the pavement. The road around the lake makes a lovely loop. Either way, we will walk slowly, think “stroll,” and no one will be left behind.
Banner Lakes is the site of an old strip mine, and most of the trails there are built on the piles of tailings. This gives them a character (gritty soil, blind corners, and short, steep hills) that is quite different from the rest of the trails in central Iowa. Hiking poles are useful, particularly on the climbs, but not a necessity.

I lead group walks on different trails a few times a month. This free Soft Trail Stroll series is designed to help people looking for a simple way to become more active. The events are for people of all ages (and dogs on leashes)—anyone who fancies a stroll!
The second purpose is to increase appreciation of our local soft trails. What is a soft trail? Simply, it is an unpaved trail. Its surface may be dirt, grass, or crushed rock/gravel. I am an avid mountain biker and know all these trails very well. I can guarantee that no one will get lost!
