The Society of Friends of the Fleet Air Arm Museum (SoFFAAM) is delighted to announce a Saturday lecture at the Fleet Air Armm Museum this September.Rob Palmer MA –RAF Chivenor and the U-boat War
RAF Chivenor played a major role during the Second World War as a 19 Group Coastal Command station. Squadrons resident at the north Devon airfield contributed to the defeat of the Nazi U-boat submarine fleet during 1943. Searchlight-equipped Vickers Wellingtons flew long night missions hunting surfaced U-boats over the Bay of Biscay that helped ensure the success of D-Day in 1944.
Many RAF Allied aircrew served at Chivenor during the bitterly fought Battle of the Atlantic, including RCAF and Free Poles and Speaker Rob Palmer will explore their role in detail with personal stories and anecdotes.
