Social Work and Politics: Getting Ready for the 2024 Elections
Stephen Pimpare, PhD

2 formal CEs pending approval from NASW VT

It has become commonplace for people to claim that each Presidential election is the most important one of our lifetimes. But there is a strong argument to be made that that really is the case in 2024. We’ll review where things are and offer tips on what to pay attention to on and after Election Day. But there’s more at stake than just the Presidency — control of the US House and Senate is also up for grabs, along with control of many state legislature and a host of state and local offices, many of which have profound influence on the lives of our clients and communities. We’ll review these elections as well, and help you think about whatsocial workersmight do to find meaningful engagement.

About the Presenter:

Stephen Pimpare is Professor of Public Policy at Vermont Law and Graduate School. He is the author of four books, including A People's History of Poverty in America, which won the Michael Harrington Award from the American Political Science Association “for demonstrating how scholarship can be used in the struggle for a better world” and most recently, Politics for Social Workers: A Practical Guide to Effecting Change, which received the 2023 Best Book Award from the Society for Social Work and Research. Pimpare is host of the New Books Network’s Public Policy Channel and a Consulting Editor for the journal Social Work.
