About this Event

Join us, Housing Matters, and Bristol City Council for a series of drop-in sessions for council housing tenants, in collaboration with community organisations, to address queries about council housing!

About this event

Housing costs are rising across the nation. While this is an issue for many, racially minoritised communities are impacted at disproportionate rates due to socioeconomic and structural factors.

While Black and minoritised communities need to access support with housing, they face barriers such as a lack of knowledge of options and resources available. BSWN's research into the experiences of racially minoritised communities in social housing included speaking to various actors in this area, such as community strategic leaders. A key point raised was the complexity of the housing register bidding process and the social housing bureaucracy.

These workshops provide a useful starting point to bridging this gap by addressing questions and concerns members of minoritised communities have regarding social housing. By providing a space for engagement, these workshops are intended to improve accessibility to council housing services, leading to a more productive relationship between the Council and these communities.

BSWN will be running this session in partnership with Bristol Charities at the Vassall Centre. With a history dating back to 1292, Bristol Charities (formerly Bristol Municipal Charities) aims to provide opportunities and support for people and communities to improve lives through:

  • Housing – Bristol Charities provides excellent quality Almshouse accommodation with support on site in a safe community setting.
  • Grants – Giving to those in need through individual grants
  • Charitable Projects – Funding local projects to reach local people in need.

The Vassall Centre is proud to be one of the earliest barrier-free workspaces set up in the UK. Purchased by Bristol Charities in May 2021, the Vassall Centre has started community development work at the site, running events, wellbeing activities, and outreach projects.
