Measuring & Communicating Impact: A Guide for Small VCSE organisations

Overview

This practical workshop focusses on how to measure and communicate the value social enterprise

and community organisations deliver through creating impact. “Impact” is the actual difference in

the world caused by an organisation’s activities. In an era of increasing scrutiny, stakeholders and

funders are increasingly demanding transparency, plus evidence that their time, money, and effort

are making a difference.

Measuring and communicating social impact involves a structured process, from planning and

measuring how activities will lead to positive change, to sharing the results using a mix of data and

stories. Effective communication involves being able to tailor your message to different audiences

and presenting information clearly and engagingly. For small projects, where resources are typically

limited, being able to measure and communicate impact in a low cost, efficient way is vital.

What you will learn

Part 1: How to measure social impact

• Define goals and methods

• Choose framework and metrics

• Research considerations and ethics

• Collect data

• Analyse and interpret results

Part 2: How to communicate social impact

• Know your audience

• Tell a compelling story

• Choose the right format

• Be transparent

You will gain ideas about how to measure social impact effectively, having created a social impact

canvas. You will also identify your audience, plus consider how to embed social impact measurement

and communication into your regular business activities. You will also get the opportunity to practise

communicating your impact and gain constructive feedback.
