Snana-yatra is unique because it is the only opportunity that we all have to personally bathe the Deities. Other than on this day, only qualified priests are allowed to bathe Them.
According to the Skanda Purana, when King Indradyumna installed the original wooden deities of Jagannatha-Baladeva-Subhadra, he arranged a bathing ceremony. This day is the birthday of Lord Jagannatha. So, every year it is commemorated by a special bath for Lord Jagannatha.
We auction hand-painted pots of delicious Jagannatha mahaprasadam. These dishes are called a Panihati or Chida-dahi feast. Panihati is a village in West Bengal, India. In the sixteenth century, when Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu appeared to propagate the Sankirtana movement, Panihati became a major centre for Gaudiya Vaishnavas.
