Smith & Bybee Wetlands Monday 12pm to 1pm 5300 N Marine Drive, Portland, OR 97203
Oregon Hikers all are welcome
— we’re rolling into one of Portland’s hidden natural gems for a short, peaceful, and wonderfully accessible outing at Smith & Bybee Wetlands Natural Area in North Portland!
We’ll meet at Smith & Bybee Wetlands Natural Area (5300 N Marine Drive, Portland, OR 97203), right at the main entrance off the Marine Drive Trail. This massive 2,000-acre urban wetland sits between the Columbia Slough and the Columbia River — a true oasis of wildness surrounded by port and industrial areas. It’s one of the largest wetlands inside any U.S. city, home to two big lakes, towering cottonwoods, willows, and incredible bird life. We’ll enjoy a gentle roll along the paved Interlakes Trail, which is wheelchair-friendly (watch for a few spots where tree roots have lifted the pavement slightly). It leads through shaded forest to an accessible viewing platform where you can look out over the expansive marsh and wetlands — perfect for spotting birds, turtles, or just soaking in the quiet beauty.
Because this is a shorter outing, we’ll keep it relaxed and easy — about 1 hour total, with time to chat, enjoy the views, and breathe that fresh wetland air together.
