Participate in SMARTs for Advocacy, a storytelling training on February 3rd from 9:00–10:30 AM. A light breakfast will be provided.

Storytelling makes a difference. From NAMI Metro volunteers appearing on WJZ’s Kids in Crisis series, to our NAMI In Our Own Voice presenters showing up in hospitals, schools, and workplaces year-round, sharing lived experience helps reduce stigma, humanize policy issues, and shift the narrative toward compassion and understanding.

This year, standing together is more important than ever. Right now, Maryland and the nation are facing significant budget pressures that threaten Medicaid funding, a program that covers essential mental health and behavioral health services for hundreds of thousands of Marylanders. Proposed federal changes could lead to deep cuts in federal Medicaid dollars and stricter eligibility requirements, putting coverage, access to treatment, and continuity of care at risk for people with mental illnesses and other vulnerabilities.

This training is open to anyone interested in learning how to share their mental health story, whether or not you are able to attend Advocacy Day on February 10th. Opportunities to speak with councilmembers, community leaders, and decision-makers arise throughout the year, and being prepared to share your story can make a lasting impact when those moments come.
