Smart Technology for Safer Motherhood: Advancing Early Detection of High-Risk Pregnancies

Technology is creating new opportunities to identify, monitor and manage high-risk pregnancies earlier, especially in underserved and resource-limited settings where access to specialist maternal healthcare may be limited.

Held alongside UNGA81, this session will explore how artificial intelligence, digital health platforms, wearable technologies, telemedicine and remote patient monitoring can support safer motherhood by helping healthcare teams detect warning signs, assess risk, strengthen continuity of care and enable timely referral and intervention.

The discussion will bring together policymakers, healthcare professionals, innovators, investors, academics and advocates to examine how smart maternal-health technologies can move beyond pilots and become part of routine antenatal and maternal care.

The session will focus on practical pathways for scaling cost-effective, accessible and responsible solutions, while ensuring that technology strengthens rather than replaces compassionate, patient-centred clinical care.

It will also address the conditions needed for equitable implementation, including affordability, digital access, health literacy, data privacy, patient autonomy and the prevention of algorithmic bias.
