slow music club is a new event series focused on artists who often occupy the quieter corners.
It’s for those whose music rewards a considered ear in an attentive room. The Junk Bar’s dedicated music space (Skukum Lounge) is the perfect place to house this concept with the third iteration of the series featuring three local acts whose sounds traverse intersecting corners of what is often referred to as “world” music.

East of West
East of West is a world music project led by Bosnian-born composer Goran Gajić (Double Bass), with Philip Griffin on Oud and Malindi Morris on Percussion. The trio formed in 2018 in order to explore new compositions that spring from the rich musical influences of the Balkans and the Mediterranean. East of West’s intricate story-telling compositions are spun over rich traditional rhythms, entwining elements of jazz and allowing space for open solos and improvisation.

Tenzin Choegyal
Tibetan singer-songwriter, activist, cultural ambassador and Grammy nominee Tenzin Choegyal is one of the world’s finest musicians in the Tibetan tradition while in the freedom of exile.
A son of Tibetan nomads, Tenzin feels a particular connection to the music of the wandering people of the Tibetan plateau. He fondly recalls his father’s flute playing and his mother’s beautiful singing as she went about her work, and attributes much of his passion to those early influences.
Tenzin is a master of traditional Tibetan instruments, the lingbu (bamboo flute), the Tibetan nomad’s instrument of choice, and the dranyen (3-stringed Tibetan lute). But he is best known for his extraordinary vocal ability and his mastery of droklu, the nomadic music of his parents.
Following his Australian debut in 1997, Tenzin has well and truly made his mark on the world music circuit and is today considered one of the world’s finest Tibetan musicians.

Matt Hsu's Obscure Orchestra (solo)
The strange mind behind Matt Hsu’s Obscure Orchestra ventures out of the parenthood cocoon for 4000 Records’ slow music club 03.
The mythic 25-piece alt-orchestra that brought together Magangdjin/Brisbane’s fringe, noise, experimental, hip hop, soul and alternative music scenes into one giant band for the last half decade, rubberbands back to its kooky beginnings — Matt Hsu’s solo exhaust valve for strange musical tinkerings and multi-instrumental experiments.
Matt’s mythos as an inimitable composer-performer and alt-orchestra leader has snowballed into something almost fabled in the Australian music landscape, beloved by knowing ears for crafting otherworldly, cinematic sounds that bottle the cosy tactile warmth of lo-fi bedroom pop, while exploring intersectional themes and the juicy spaces between cultures. At the same time, Matt Hsu, in all encounters, is also just an unassuming, silly, potato chip enthusiast who’s obsessed with interesting sounds.
2020s music conundrum, MHOO crashed onto Queensland’s biggest stages, award ceremonies and on national TV, yet somehow remained cosily ‘obscure’ through its anti-fame and pro-janky sounds philosophy, sidestepping the polish of actual ‘orchestras’ and the formula of ‘indie’ music, to make homespun, BIPOC-led music experiments that floated past many and enraptured curious ears. Beloved for combining rare instruments, found objects, DIY punk ethos, and intimate reflections of Asian-Australian identity, Matt’s music roams freely from Magandjin/Brisbane’s experimental fringes to revered stages like QPAC, Woodfordia and QAGOMA.
