About this Event
Natural dyes and inks practices are sustainable, slow and mindful. This colour workshop invites to a journey of wonder through overlooked organic materials such as food waste, weeds and spices. For this session, we will experiment with turmeric and avocado to learn the basics of dyes and the logic of inks. This workshop proposes an overview of the natural dyeing process, from fabric preparation to the application of the dyes. Different methods of pattern making and texture will be demonstrated and discussed.
Finally, we explore how to make inks from dyes and investigate other seasonal colour recipes in our everyday surrounding:
- extracting colour from spices and plant
- creating and applying you natural dyes
- awareness of colorfastness and modifier
- pre-treating of fabrics with mordant
- ideas for zero waste and using your dyes from your kitchen
- troubleshooting, tip and what to watch out for when using natural dyes
About your host:
Messua has been based in London since 2011. Her paintings think about temporality , and materiality. She emphasises the process, working with laborious and repetitive techniques. She is making her colour from natural ingredients such as plants, roots or fruits. She is currently undertaking a PhD at the Royal College of Art where she explores slowly marking time in Late-capitalist temporalities. Her work has been seen in group shows throughout the U.K, such as the Jerwood Drawing Prize, Extimacy at the Copeland Gallery or Water is Wet at the Stanley Picker. But also, Internationally in France, Japan and Korea.
