Sleepy Hollow Cinema Presents: Uncle Buck & Planes, Trains and Automobiles
About this Event
Holiday Candy!
John Candy stars in Uncle Buck (1989), with Macaulay Culkin and Amy Madigan, and Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987), with Steve Martin. From awkward babysitting and forced familial bonding to the trials and tribulations of holiday travel, Candy is an endearing Everyman—and never funnier than in this pair of John Hughes comedy classics.
Uncle Buck (1989, PG), directed by John Hughes, is a heartwarming classic comedy starring John Candy as Buck Russell—an easygoing, slovenly bachelor called upon to watch his brother’s three kids during a family emergency. Landing in an affluent Chicago suburb, Uncle Buck quickly turns the household upside down with his unconventional lifestyle, giant pancakes, and clunky car. Despite initial friction with his rebellious teenage niece, Buck's genuine heart, unconventional wisdom, and fierce loyalty ultimately bring the family closer together.
Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987, R), directed by John Hughes, is a beloved holiday comedy starring Steve Martin as Neal Page, a high-strung marketing executive desperate to fly home to Chicago for Thanksgiving. When bad weather reroutes his flight, Neal is reluctantly paired with Del Griffith (John Candy), an overly friendly, loud, but big-hearted shower-curtain-ring salesman. As their journey devolves into a hilarious series of breakdown-filled travel disasters, Neal’s initial irritation gradually gives way to genuine empathy, producing one of cinema's most touching stories of unexpected friendship.
