About this Event
Join us for a rare, hands-on opportunity to learn Hawaiian slack key guitar with renowned musician Makana.
In this intimate workshop, participants will explore the foundations of slack key, including essential techniques, tunings, and the cultural and historical roots of this uniquely Hawaiian art form. Makana will guide both group learning and individual instruction, sharing not only his deep knowledge—but also stories, traditions, and personal insights rarely experienced in a classroom setting.
With a lineage connected to legendary masters such as Bobby Moderow Jr., Raymond Kāne, and Sonny Chillingworth, and a style influenced by icons like Gabby Pahinui and Leonard Kwan, Makana brings both tradition and innovation to his teaching. His approach blends classic Hawaiian techniques with original tunings and global musical influences, offering a rich and inspiring learning experience.
This workshop is intentionally limited to just 20 participants to ensure a meaningful and personalized session.
Join us at Waikīkī Community Center for an afternoon of music, culture, and connection.
🌙 Make it a full weekend of slack key
Makana will also be performing live in concert at Waikīkī Community Center on Saturday at 3 PM and 6 PM.
