Alto sax and flute player Russell Kirk has curated a full evening of jazz with a twist, starting off with Mike Kuhl on percussion and electronics, joined by special guests. Then Kirk's ensemble takes the stage. Joining Russell will be Theljon Allen on trumpet, Dan Ryan on guitar, and Roman Kirk on bass.
Multi-instrumentalist and composer Russell Kirk is a native of Baltimore. Russell studied at Towson University and The Peabody Conservatory. While earning his master’s degree at New York University, Russell was an adjunct faculty member at The Steinhardt School of Culture, headed a music outreach program in Harlem, and interned at Saturday Night Live. Russell has performed and recorded with a widely diverse list, among them – The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, George Clinton’s Parliament Funkadelic, The Temptations, The Four Tops. In addition, he has played with: Sam Rivers, Terri Lyne Carrington, Dennis Chambers, John Scofield, Wayne Krantz, Kenny Werner, Jill Scott, Vusi Mahlasela, Paquito D'Rivera and many others.
Mike Kuhl, a graduate from Towson University, has performed locally and throughout the globe alongside jazz greats Dave Liebman, Tony Malaby, Michael Formaneck, Dave Ballou, Ellery Eskelin and Claudio Roditi. Outside of jazz, Kuhl has shared the stage with many international acts such as Beach House, Arboretum, Cigarettes After Sex, Tom Tom Club, and The Ravonnettes. As a leader, Kuhl performs with his trio every Tuesday night at Bertha’s in Fells Point, Baltimore.
