Skills Focus Series- Spring 2025 (Online)

This 12-week course is designed for intentional focus on foundational skills of ASL-English interpreting that often challenge interpreters:

• March 29-Use of Space
• April 5- Register
• April 12- Direct vs. Indirect Language
• April 19- Powerful & Powerless Speech
• April 26- Expansion
• May 3- Grammar Structure
• May 10- Interpreting vs. Transliterating

DATES/TIME: Saturdays, February 22-May 10, 2025 from 6pm-8pm CST. Classes will be recorded and the weekly recording links will be sent to you for your review or in case you miss a class. I also usually stay after class a while to talk about other things you need to discuss.

CEUs: There are no RID CEUs for this training but you can request a certificate if needed to fulfill work and/or state training requirements. The certificate will note that this course is 24 hours.

PLATFORM: Attendees will be emailed a Zoom link to attend the webinar.

LANGUAGE: This webinar will be presented in ASL and spoken English since we will be working with English-ASL interpreting performance exam candidates.

MATERIALS: Class materials will be emailed weekly prior to class.

About the Presenter: Shonna Magee
Shonna Magee, MRC, NIC: Master, CI, CT, OTC, CoreCHI, CP-WIP, brings over 26 years of extensive experience in interpreting, presenting, interpreter diagnostics, and mentoring. Her areas of specialization include emergency management, vocational rehabilitation, video remote interpreting (VRI), and medical interpreting.

Shonna has delivered workshops and keynotes across the country, helping hundreds of interpreters achieve certification. She is an instructor for the annual Emergency Management Interpreter Training (EMIT) program in Georgia, where she presents on Public Information Officer (PIO) responsibilities and broadcast interpreting.

Her academic contributions include serving as a professor of interpreting and American Sign Language (ASL) at Daytona State College and as a professor of ASL at Pensacola State College. Currently, she teaches interpreting ethics at Georgia State University.

Shonna earned her Bachelor’s degree in Interpreting from the University of Cincinnati and her Master’s degree in Rehabilitation Counseling from the University of South Carolina. During her time in South Carolina, she served as the Statewide Coordinator of Deaf Services for the South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation Department.

She is the Director of Operations at SIGNature Access Solutions LLC and SIGNature CEUs LLC and serves as Vice President of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID).
