About this Event
Skill Up: Meanwhile Spaces
Tuesday 27th August 2024, 11am to 4pm
For young people aged 15-18 years.
Join us for a creative workshop to explore the possibilities of meanwhile spaces, temporarily vacant sites designed to benefit local communities.
In this workshop you will learn practical evaluation skills, work individually and in groups to discuss ideas and experiment with different methods for idea generation and problem solving through drawing. Each participant will come away with new insights into the ideas and possibilities for designing temporary community spaces as well as a detailed plan for their own meanwhile space.
We will discuss how architects, developers and local interest groups have used vacant properties, empty or forgotten land, to create shared and innovative schemes for temporary gardens, cultural events, play and work. We will explore the possibilities of working with communities while embracing circular design and sustainable materials to develop sites that demonstrate new possibilities for architectural practice and urban space. You will then be introduced to plan drawing to scale before we develop and design our own meanwhile spaces that transforms the built environment and shapes its future possibilities.
This creative architecture workshop is led by educator Marianne Holm Hansen, for young people aged 15 to 18 years.
Marianne Holm Hansen is an artist working across media, including photography, drawing and text-based works. She works internationally, including as a fine art and photography lecturer, and on creative programmes within a range of institutions such as RIBA, Tate and the British Library.
About the Workshop Series
Our workshops for ages 15 to 18 ‘skill up’ teenagers who are thinking about studying architecture or design. Participants think critically, share their views on architecture and express themselves through creative practice. In past workshops participants have learnt how to work to an architectural brief, improve portfolios, develop architectural drawing skills using a variety of media (including digital drawing on iPads) and photography skills, and work individually and collaboratively to think about how to design sustainable and responsible architecture.
Based in London, mainly our HQ at 66 Portland Place, all participants must arrive by 11am. These workshops are led by professional educators and all materials are included in the ticket price, but lunch is not provided.
If you're under 18, tickets must be booked by a parent or guardian. Online booking in advance is essential and if we do not receive full registration information in advance of the event we cannot allow the participant to attend.
To see other learning workshops taking place in this series, see our young people page.
